Small fey folk whose need to anchor themselves to the world has made them compulsive seekers of knowledge and experience, gnomes are a misfit race. They are alien to Lanjyr and far from ideally suited to life in the world. Forced from their original home, the realm of the fey known as the Dreaming, the inherently magical gnome race is haunted by the spiritual damage caused by their exodus. Each gnome suffers a magical malady that slowly strips it of its vitality, magic, and creativity. This curse, called the Bleaching, is only kept at bay, literally, by making life interesting.
Solitary gnomes have wandered the continent in search of new wonders and knowledge for millennia, and are commonly encountered throughout human lands. They are prevalent in academia, where the gnomish penchant for classifying and organizing lore became the basis of taxonomy. Gnomes are so influential in the natural sciences that a familiarity with their ever-evolving language is a requirement to advance in the field.
While gnomes are competitive amongst themselves and easily tire of each others’ company, some have formed enclaves and cities of their own by whimsically reconstructing the ruins of Elfaivar.
